Following on to our announcement on May 11, 2022, we at FalconStor are thrilled to see that IBM is releasing for general availability both directly and through its resellers FalconStor’s StorSafe VTL tuned specifically for the IBM Power Systems Virtual Server (PowerVS). This release marks a milestone in the relationship between IBM and FalconStor Software, an IBM Business Partner, in delivering solutions to modernize IBM i, AIX and Linux environments. Now enterprises running their applications in PowerVS have an enterprise-class option for backup and disaster recovery to IBM Cloud Object Storage.
What is StorSafe VTL for IBM PowerVS?
StorSafe VTL for IBM PowerVS is a cloud-native backup solution designed to be highly scalable, storage efficient, and secured. Customers can start small and scale to PBs of data over time while its highly efficient deduplication technology can reduce the size of backups by up to 95%, significantly reducing storage costs. StorSafe VTL can also encrypt data in flight and at rest for enhanced security.
How about Disaster Recovery?
Part of what’s powerful about this announcement is that it not only will do cloud-native backup, but with a second instance of StorSafe VTL for PowerVS it can also provide disaster recovery capabilities. Previously, IBM Power customers running workloads in PowerVS were limited in their ability to effectively protect those applications as current options are limited to 2TB of data or less, and do not offer deduplication, thereby significantly increasing the amount of Cloud Object Storage required.
We caught up with Terry Thomas, director of IBM Power public cloud product management at IBM recently and asked about this new offering from IBM. According to Terry, “Customers are increasingly embracing PowerVS to run their IBM i, AIX and Linux workloads and need a robust solution for backup and disaster recovery that they can have confidence in. FalconStor StorSafe VTL for PowerVS is a state-of-the-art solution we’re proud to bring to market to meet our clients’ needs.”
Availability
StorSafe VTL for PowerVS is available today directly through IBM as well as through IBM’s worldwide ecosystem of business partners, who will have access to and be able to service their clients with StorSafe VTL. This release is the first expected from this business partnership between IBM and FalconStor that is intended to accelerate cloud migration and hybrid cloud backup of IBM Power systems. Additional solutions previously announced include migration of IBM i workloads from on-premises to PowerVS, and hybrid cloud backups for secured, air-gapped protection. IBM is expected to soon release FalconStor’s StorSafe VTL for on-premises that offers customers highly efficient backup-to-disk and is fully compatible with IBM BRMS.
